Thu, 08/18/2022 - 6:00pm

Robert “Jay” James Legere, beloved son of John and Kate Legere of Islesboro, passed away on Saturday, August 13, 2022. Born July 27, 2003 in Belfast, Jay lived in Winterport with his parents and brother until the family moved to Islesboro shortly after his third birthday.

Jay attended Islesboro Central School and Midcoast School of Technology, graduating from Islesboro in 2021. From there he successfully completed a one-year program in heavy equipment operation at Washington County Community College in Calais. Jay worked at Islesboro Marine Enterprises from age 14 until he left for college. Most recently he worked at Rossiter’s Small Engine in Lincolnville and Belmont Boatworks.

From an early age, Jay loved being on the water, driving, camping, taking things apart and putting them back together, all things related to engines, and wrestling with his brother. His childhood and teen years were spent in the woods and on the beaches, floats and roads of Islesboro, hunting crabs and snakes, snorkeling, biking, dirt biking, boating, fishing, stargazing, working on his treasured truck and laughing with friends, and “proximity associates.” Jay could fix just about anything and had as many as nine different vehicles over a three-year period. He was an excellent driver and an adept boatman.

He had a special bond with his brother, Eli. Together the two of them enjoyed making fun of their parents and going on adventures great and small. The Swedish proverb ‘Shared joy is a double joy, shared sorrow is half a sorrow’ came to life for Jay when he met Nina Miller, who enhanced what would turn out to be the last year of his life so very much.

In addition to his parents, Jay is survived by brother Eli Legere and girlfriend Claudia Johnson of Denver, Colorado; grandparents Bob and Del Rowe of Hampden; aunts and uncles Julie Nealley of Winterport, Jayne and Tom Jones of Acton, Massachusetts, Kathy and John Harter of Somersworth, New Hampshire, Michelle and Randy Rouleau of Somersworth, New Hampshire; cousins Amelia Hersey, Eliza Donahue, Will Nealley, Emmy-Kate Weinstein, TJ Jones, Olivia Walsh, Christopher Rouleau, Ashley and Jayden Bogrett; his beloved girlfriend Nina Miller who he loved beyond measure; Nina’s parents and brother, Amy, Dan, and Henry Miller; and many friends.

He was predeceased by grandparents Roger and Peggy Legere of Lee, New Hampshire.

Jay was dearly loved and will be sadly missed.

A celebration of Jay’s short but meaningful life will be held on August 26, 2022, at approximately 1:45 p.m., at the Islesboro Community Center. In lieu of flowers, donations in Jay’s memory may be made to the Islesboro Community Fund at https://www.islesborocommunityfund.org/.
