National Weather Service issues winter storm warning for Thursday

    CAMDEN — Following on the heels of Tuesday's snow and sleet that left a crusty coating of ice atop the white stuff, the National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for Thursday, Feb. 9.

    The winter storm warning is in effect from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Thursday, with heavy snow in the forecast during the daylight hours.

    Due to the impending nor’easter, Winterfest organizers have had to reschedule the CJ Chenier concert at the Camden Opera House to Friday, March 3, at 7 p.m. If you have purchased a ticket, and can make the new date, come to the rescheduled date with your original tickets in hand. If you cannot make the rescheduled date, you will receive a full refund.

    Snow will develop from southwest to northeast Thursday morning, according to the NWS, and become heavy at times over southern New Hampshire and coastal Maine around mid-day. During the day, new snow accumulation of 4 to 7 inches possible. The snow will quickly taper to flurries Thursday evening, but not before leaving behind possibly 1 to 3 more inches of snow.

    Gusty northerly winds will produce some blowing and drifting snow Thursday afternoon and evening. Much colder air will follow this system Thursday night and Friday, with bitterly cold wind chill temperatures expected.

    Winds will be north at 10 to 20 mph, with gusts up to 30 mph. Temperatures Thursday will be 8 degrees Fahrenheit to 22 F. Friday will see a high of 13 F during the day, dropping down to 3 F overnight.

    Snow is likely Saturday, with a high of 30 F and a low of 22 F. Sunday has a 50 percent chance of bringing snow showers, with a high of 36 F, continuing into the night, when precipitation could change from snow showers to a mix of rain and snow, then all rain.

    The 27th annual U.S. National Toboggan Championships are this weekend, Feb. 10-12, and while the storm will delay some set up on Thursday, registration, toboggan inspections, vendor setup and reserved parking for trailers will commence as soon as the snow is plowed and the committee can turn on the “Welcome” signs.

    Toboggan Nationals officially open for racers at 10 a.m. on Friday, when pre-registered teams can come to Tobogganville and pick up their registration packets and goodie bags. Toboggan inspections will also get underway at 10 a.m., with both registration and inspections running through 7 p.m. Friday.
