ROCKPORT —  The Midcoast Recreation Center celebrated the start of 2020 by hosting its annual New Year’s Open tennis tournament Saturday, Jan. 4 and Sunday, Jan. 5. 

The event is a United States Tennis Association event and typically lures players from around the state and New England region to the Midcoast to compete, according to Midcoast Recreation Center tennis director Seth Meyer. 

“We really look forward to this event,” said Meyer. “It’s always a great way to ring in the new year.”

In men’s open singles, Chris Kemp (Tenants Harbor) defeated Ezra Lemole (Rockland) 6-4, 6-3 in the final. 

In women’s open singles, Mollie Guba (Newburyport, MA) defeated Caitlin Cass (Newcastle) 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 in a tightly contested final.

In the men’s open doubles final, Chris Kemp (Tenant Harbor) and Seth Meyer (Camden) defeated Eric Lee (Appleton) and Tanner Tanter (Warren) 6-2, 7-6.

In the mixed open doubles final, Abby Blakeley (Hope) and Seth Meyer (Camden) defeated Caitlin Cass (Newcastle) and Josh Chun (Belfast) 7-6, 4-6, 6-1.
