Mother accused of beating daughter to death gives birth to healthy baby boy
WISCASSET — A Stockton Springs woman accused of beating her 10-year-old daughter to death in February gave birth to a healthy baby boy May 24, almost exactly three months since her Feb. 26 arrest, according to the woman’s lawyer.
Sharon Carrillo, 33, was visibly pregnant during her first court appearance alongside husband Julio Carrillo, 51, in Waldo County Superior Court Feb. 28.
Both are charged with depraved indifference murder in the Feb. 25 death of Marissa Kennedy, who died violently after months of sustained abuse and have been held at Two Bridges Regional Jail since their arrest.
The duo also has two toddler age children together who were taken into state custody following Marissa’s death.
The new baby boy was seized immediately and turned over to a third party, according to Sharon’s lawyer Chris MacLean. She has since been returned to Two Bridges Regional Jail.
It has been widely reported elsewhere that the baby, along with the Carrillo’s two older children, is in the custody of Julio Carrillo’s family, though MacLean was unable to confirm this information.
The case against Sharon Carrillo is currently before the Maine Law Court, who is reviewing Justice Robert Murray’s decision to keep prosecutors on the case following allegations of misconduct.
News of the birth comes on the heels of the release of a report on the findings of a government investigation into DHHS’s handling of the cases of Marissa Kennedy and four-year-old Kendall Chick.
Chick was reportedly murdered by her grandfather’s then-fiance Shawna Gatto, who has been charged with depraved indifference murder.
The Office of Program Evaluation and Government Accountability was directed to undertake the investigation in March at the request of the Government Oversight Committee.
