Like a moth to lanterns: Vacuum the brown tail moths into soapy water

LINCOLNVILLE — Side doors at the Lincolnville Central School provided a resting spot for unanticipated visitors, Saturday morning, July 13, at 8 a.m., when Janet Redfield captured the moment.

The school has outdoor lights on all night and brown tail moths collected under the lights.  They were still there at 11 a.m.

Redfield offered two suggestions for when moths accumulate:

1. Vacuum them up in a shop vac with HEPA filter after putting 1/2” of soapy water into the vacuum.

2.  Don’t leave your outside lights on all night and you’ll be amazed at how beautiful the Milky Way and planets appear.
