Michael ‘Tony’ Balser, obituary
FRIENDSHIP — Michael ‘Tony’ Balser, 68, fell asleep in the loving arms of Jesus on April 30, 2025.
Tony was born in Cleveland and his family later settled in Seville. It was there that he formed many of the values that would shape his life: faith, generosity, and a deep love for others. He joined the Navy after high school, where he proudly served his country and sang in the Navy Blue Jacket Choir—a reflection of the lifelong joy he found in music.
Tony was an athlete at heart. In school, he played football and wrestled, and that passion for sports stayed with him. He was a loyal Ohio State fan and loved nearly every game, whether he was in the stands or cheering from his living room. When his children were young, he was their biggest coach and supporter—both on the field and in life.
He was a gifted preacher who served congregations across the South and New England, always eager to share the love and grace of Christ.
Tony had a soft heart and a kind soul. He was quick with a joke and quicker still to lend a hand when someone needed help. Generous to a fault, he believed in showing up for others and never hesitated to meet a need when he saw one.
Above all, Tony was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He adored his wife Karen and found endless joy in his family. Tony was most at home when surrounded by the people he loved. He supported his children’s dreams with pride and found immeasurable happiness in talking and spending time with his grandchildren—Bailey, Nathan, Isla, and Natalie.
Tony is preceded in death by his beloved mother, Bonnie.
He is survived by his father, Nahum, and stepmother, Hilda; his wife, Karen; his children, Jen Pollert and her husband Taylor of Nashville, Andy and his wife Cassie of Friendship; his grandchildren; his brothers, Dan (Diane), Mark; his sister, Rhonda Koch (Dennis), and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held this summer when extended family members can be present.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you take time to enjoy your loved ones. Tony would want nothing more.
