Maine Performing Arts presents 'Newsies Jr.' at Camden Opera House
Musical Theatre students from Camden Ballet Theatre will perform the youth adaptation of “Newsies Jr.,” a Broadway show inspired by the rousing true story of newsboys in turn-of-the-century New York City.
The performance will be Saturday, Aug. 23, at 2 p.m., at Camden Opera House. Doors open at 1:30 p.m.
When powerful newspaper publishers raise prices at the newsboys' expense, the charismatic Jack Kelly rallies newsies and working children from across the city to strike against the unfair conditions. Together, the newsies learn that they are stronger united and create a movement to fight for what's right.
This uplifting production is suitable for all audiences. Runtime is approximately 90 minutes, including a brief intermission.
"This show is the culmination of our second annual musical theatre summer intensive," says Gabrielle Hymes, founder and artistic director of Camden Ballet Theatre. "Our goal is to give students the full theater experience—from auditions and rehearsals to assisting with props, sets, and tech week. They are engaged in every step of the creative process."
