Maine Conservation Voters take to toboggan to raise awareness of climate change

Thu, 02/09/2017 - 6:00pm

On Saturday, Maine Conservation Voters will race in the 2017 U.S. National Toboggan Championships at Camden Snow Bowl alongside hundreds of other teams joining in the annual festivities. Their team – “The Rising Seas” – will be dressed as polar bears and prominent climate change deniers as they race down the slope.

Their goal is to draw attention to the threats of climate change and encourage Mainers to demand action from their elected officials. Maine is already seeing the effects of climate change, as rising temperatures in the Gulf of Maine threaten fisheries and cases of tick-borne disease increase across the state.

Their race division, which includes more than 300 teams, will begin at 1 p.m.
