Meeting tonight

Lincolnville Selectmen to hear about proposed school repairs

Mon, 07/10/2017 - 8:00am

Exterior siding along the northwest wall of Lincolnville Central School has deteriorated, and the School Committee will talk with Lincolnville Selectmen this evening, July 10, about recommendations to remove the rotting composite siding, and repair the structure.

The project carries an estimated $144,726 pricetag, and the School Committee is asking the town to help pay for the repairs with the remaining school construction bond funds.

The school was built in 2005, and the Capital Campaign fund has approximately $190,000 left in it. Because Lincolnville voters approved the school construction expenditure more than 12 years ago, control of that specific fund lies under municipal purview.

The School Committee is also investigating other funding options, as well as insurance, to help pay for the repair, according to the Town Administrator newsletter that was circulated to the selectmen.

On June 20, Camden-based engineering company Cordijia Capital Projects Group submitted a comprehensive report concerning the deteriorating and repair recommendations (see attached PDF).

The report indicated that water had infiltrated behind the siding along the gymnasium and locker walls. The siding, which is a compressed particle board composite design to look like traditional clapboard, had buckled out from the wall sheathing and is falling apart.

The school, built in 2005, is 31,715 square feet in size, and is two-story brick masonry and steel building with areas of composite wood siding, according to the report.

Oak Point Associates of Biddeford, was the architect and Bowman Constructors, of Newport, served as general contractor, the report said.

The deterioration was first noted in Spring 2010, and some work was attempted to repair it. But, the rot worsened and in 2016, the Lincolnville School Committee retained Cordijia to conduct a deeper analysis.

At this evening’s meeting, which begins at 6 p.m. at the Lincolnville Town Office, the board and committee will talk about how to pay for the repairs.

In other town business, the selectmen will discuss re-securing loose planks on the pier decking on the Lincolnville Beach municipal wharf.
