Larry W. Smith, Sr., obituary
ST. GEORGE — Larry W. Smith, Sr., 87, died Sunday, October 20, 2024, just six days shy of his 88th birthday. Born October 26, 1936, he was the son of Vernon and Thelma Watt Smith.
Larry graduated from Jonesport High School on June 7, 1953 and married the love of his life, Juanita June Dressler, on the very same day. Larry and June were married for 63 years before June’s untimely death.
Larry owned and operated his own business, ‘Smitty’s Service Station’ later enlisting in the U.S. Coast Guard Reserves. After enlisting full time, he had a 24-year career, serving our country, retiring from the Coast Guard on May 8, 1977 at the rank of E8, Senior Chief Machinist.
Never one to be idle, he continued working after retirement, first at Snow Harbor, later at Jeff’s Marine, Dragon Cement, Maritime Energy, Moddy Pontiac, Bancroft and lastly at the East Wind Inn where he worked until it was sold.
Larry was active in the Masons and Eastern Star and held many positions within those organizations.
Larry enjoyed camping with his family at Spring River Lake and Mic Mac Campground for many years. He loved hunting and fishing at his camp in Addison.
Predeceased by his beloved wife, June, in 2016; his eldest child, Crystal Hunter in 2022; and his daughter Bonnie S. Dean in 2023; Larry is survived by his two sons, Larry W. Smith, Jr. and his wife Alice, Daren Smith; his grandchildren, Jacob Hunter and his wife Jessie, Martin Hunter, Courtney Lattanzi and her husband Dan, Kristin Wright, Travis Dean and his wife Jenna, Brandon Smith and his wife Hannah, Amanda Smith, April Foster; his great-grandchildren, Angie Hunter, Isla Lattanzi, Dean Wright, Jack Dean; his son-in-law Tom Dean who was very special to him; as well as his caregiver Linda.
Larry’s family has chosen to remember his life privately. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the St. George Fireman’s Association, P.O. Box 249, Tenants Harbor, Maine 04860.
