Kim “Mac” Irwin McFarland, obituary
ROCKLAND — Kim “Mac” Irwin McFarland went home to his Lord and Savior while surrounded by family on November 28, 2024.
Born in Kansas City, Missouri, November 12, 1951, Mac was the son of Eleanor and Elbrige McFarland. When Ellie married Duane Rowell in 1971, Mac gained a father whose impact on his life and faith cannot be put into words.
In 1987, Mac joined Downeast Energy, where he worked his way from a counter clerk at Puffin Stop, to managing multiple convenience stores as a regional supervisor. He then moved to propane sales, working from Brunswick. In 2014 he joined the team at Maritime Energy where he worked until his retirement in 2020. Never one to be idle, Mac, who loved driving, then provided transportation through SafeCare. Mac deeply loved those he worked with and considered himself incredibly blessed by their support and generosity through his illness.
Mac strived to be of service to those around him. He donated his universal blood faithfully on a monthly schedule for years. Mac also gave his time at the Pope Memorial Humane Society, the Lobster Festival, with The Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and with various community events and committees. He and Jane enjoyed hosting students through the Penobscot Language school. Mac also hosted a radio broadcast on WRFR Saturday mornings, where he interviewed local personalities. The radio station was located across the street from his home.
Mac enjoyed NASCAR races, and attending local drag races with his friend Woody. Year round he kept his bird feeders filled, and at all times, his lawn was carefully mowed. His girls will miss their personalized and live time weather forecasts, and reminders to prepare appropriately for incoming storms. Mac also enjoyed both watching planes and following flight path updates in real time.
The Lord brought Mac his precious wife of 27 years through the First Baptist Church of Rockland. Together, they found their church home at Lakeview Presbyterian in 2003. There, Mac was ordained and installed as a Deacon in 2010. As a lay leader he organized Men’s Breakfast, served on missions’ teams, ran the sound board, led services at local nursing homes, and prepared communion. His church family has shared that he always had a smile for everyone and was known as a willing and faithful servant.
Mac is predeceased by his mother, Eleanor Rowell of Union.
Mac is survived by his wife, Jane McFarland of Rockland; his father, Duane Rowell of Union; his brother, Kevin (Deb) of New Hampshire; his daughters Andrea (John) Hays of South Carolina, Elizabeth (Joshua) Tilton of Hampden; sons David and Duane McFarland of Tennesee; and stepsons David and Phillip Andresen of Portland. He was blessed with many grandchildren, and was recently told a great grandchild was on the way!
Mac’s family is extraordinarily grateful for the compassionate care he received at Sussman House. In lieu of flowers his family requests donations be made in his honor to the “Volunteer Fund” at Sussman House, to keep the bird feeders and family kitchen filled. Donations can be made online with the designation of Volunteer Fund, or make checks payable to “Volunteer Fund” and send them Att: Judy Lambert, 40 Anchor Drive, Rockport, Maine 04841.
A memorial service will be held Monday, December 2, 2024, at 2 p.m., at Lakeview Orthodox Presbyterian Church, 188 Rockland St. Rockport, ME 04856. The Rev. Stephen Tracey will officiate. A time of fellowship and refreshments will follow at the church.
