BANGOR — The Husson University athletic department is honoring, on its website, all seniors who would have been honored at the university’s annual senior banquet.

Three local student-athletes have been honored by the institution.

Golf

The university honored, April 27, members of its golf team that had their seasons cut short amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

At the collegiate level, golf is played in both the fall and the spring.

The spring golf season was supposed to include April tournaments in North Carolina, Massachusetts and Rhode Island with the NCAA Division III Championship in Florida. The entire spring season was scrapped amid the pandemic.

“To the seniors whose 2020 seasons were abruptly cut short in the wake of the coronavirus: This is not the exit from collegiate men's golf that you envisioned nor deserve,” the department wrote. “Although this was an unsatisfying end, we hope you take comfort in the memories made and goals accomplished in seasons past. We know you will step forth and make the world better in an unprecedented time that can really use your strength, knowledge, and spirit.”

The university’s men’s golf team had five seniors on this year’s team, including Rockland native Nick Mazurek and Unity native Ross DeLorenzo.

Before attending Husson University, Mazurek attended Oceanside High School and Southern New Hampshire University. He is slated to earn a bachelor’s degree in sport management from Husson.

“Nick was a pleasure to coach. He was always ready for the task asked of him,” said Husson head coach Mike Dugas. “In Nick's own words, ‘you have to love the process.’ Nick sure did love the process. He was not going to be outworked. It was so painful to see Nick's career end due to the COVID-19 virus as he had worked so hard for his turn at a National Championship. I need Nick to know that he is a Champion in life and great things are in front of him. Thank you, Nick, for all you gave me and our team!”

Before attending Husson University, the six-foot DeLorenzo attended Mount View High School. He is slated to earn a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Husson.

“Ross was a fun teammate to have on the team,” said Dugas. “He was always at practices and players enjoyed teeing it up with Ross. His strength was his academics. He earned our highest GPA on a consistent basis. It is that determination that is going to ensure that Ross makes the most out of his degree. I can only hope that Ross enjoyed his time as a student-athlete as much as I enjoyed coaching him.”

Dance

The university honored, May 1, the lone senior on the Eagles dance team, Winterport native Maria Andrew.

Husson cheer and dance head coach Hillary Hoyt noted Andrew represented everything a Husson athlete should be.

“Throughout all her years on the team, Maria always comes to practice with a great work ethic and full of excitement,” said Hoyt. “She has been a great captain and is always excited to try new things! She is always encouraging the team to try their best! We thank her for all her dedication and she will be missed next year!”
