ROCKLAND — Helen M. Simmons, 91, died peacefully Aug. 8, 2013, at Pen Bay Medical Center in Rockport, where she had been a patient only a few hours.

Born in Bremen Sept. 24, 1921, she was the daughter of Granville F. and Ruth I Maloney Osier. She was educated in local schools and attended Lincoln Academy in Newcastle.

She married Wilmer S. Simmons in Bremen in 1939. The couple made their home in Round Pond until moving to South Portland, where Mr. Simmons worked in the shipyard. They later returned to Round Pond, residing there until 1958 when they moved to Rockland.

For many years Mrs. Simmons was an active member of the Vesper Rebekah Lodge of Round Pond. She enjoyed association with the Owls Head Extension and for many years attended Thomaston Baptist Church.

In earlier years she became an avid mini-golfer and won many trophies. She was an accomplished cook and enjoyed furniture refinishing and knitting mittens, which she donated to area children.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Simmons was predeceased by her sister, Madelyn E. Leeman; and a brother, Granville "Spike" Osier Jr. She is survived by one daughter, Cheryl Simmons Wass of Melbourne, Fla.; one son, Craig A. Simmons and his wife, Lorraine, of Gonic, N.H.; a brother, Newton "Jim" and his wife, Diane, of Needham, Mass.; her sister, Phyllis E. Brewer, with whom she has shared a house for more than 50 years; six grandchildren, Jeffrey Wass, Patrick Wass, Jolene Liechty, Craig Simmons Jr., Daniel Simmons and Derek Simmons; eight great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; as well as several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held Tuesday, Aug. 13, at 10 a.m. at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock St. in Rockland. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery in Bremen.
