Hearty Roots, the Bristol-based nonprofit that creates and implements outdoor programs for children, is in the process of searching for a home base on the shores of Muscongus Bay.

Each summer, the bay becomes the backdrop for the extended coastal expeditions that Hearty Roots takes, when staff and small groups of participants explore the mosaic of pristine waters and rugged islands along the coastline.

“In order to create the safest and most reliable programs, we’re on a mission to acquire a piece of waterfront property to become our home base for these saltwater programs,” said Hearty Roots Founder and Director Haley Bezon.

The mission of Hearty Roots is to encourage children, “to dig deep, discover their grit, and cultivate meaningful connections,” as they participate in outdoor adventures.

Founded in 2017, the organization combines outdoor adventure programming and intentional developmental experiences.

“Through our unique fusion of getting ‘off the grid’ and fostering protective factors, self-esteem, and interpersonal connectedness, at Hearty Roots our goal is to support kids in their development as whole people who can then have a positive impact on society,” the nonprofit said. “Children from all backgrounds benefit when they find their inner strength and resources — the powerful realization that they are 'enough' and resilient.”

Programs include yoga, cross-country skiing, paddling the coast, camping under the stars, and therapeutic group activities.

The land would offer a wilderness setting for small cohorts of up to eight local kids and three staff members who teach and practice Leave No Trace Principles to ensure that the land and water are respected and enjoyed responsibly.

“As we continue our search for a property, we are looking forward to having conversations with local conservation and outdoor recreation-minded community members who understand the importance of connecting local youth to the lands and waters that surround their community in transformational ways,” said Bezon. “We are actively pursuing partnerships with conservation organizations and are open to discussing land donations, land shares or leasing, as well as additional ideas, approaches, and support.”
