Friends of Sears Island Offers Children’s Activity Kits

Wed, 11/17/2021 - 5:30pm

SEARSPORT - The  Friends of Sears Island will be offering free “Patterns in Nature” grab-and-go activity kits this month for children. The kits include various crafts and activities for children including materials to make a nature-inspired suncatcher and a mandala decoration, and also to participate in a pattern walk scavenger hunt. The activities intend to enhance children’s understanding of math in nature, covering concepts such as symmetry, Fibonacci numbers, and fractals. Educational handouts with further information about these concepts are included in the kits.

The kits are intended for ages 5-12 and are free, although Friends of Sears Island does always accept donations that allow them to create more free programming for locals. There is a limited quantity of kits available and they will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. If you are an educator, feel free to request free PDF handouts via email (outreach@friendsofsearsisland.org). You can also use this email to request a kit for your child. Once you receive a confirmation email, you can pick up your kit from November 16-30 at the Carver Memorial Library in Searsport.
