ROCKLAND — Francis Smyth Frye Jr., 85, of Rockland, died Jan. 24, 2016, at Eastern Maine Medical Center, surrounded by his loving family. Born in North Haven on May 21, 1930, he was the son of Francis S. and Dorothy (Lobley) Frye.

Following high school graduation, he attended Florida State University in Tampa, where he received his bachelor's degree and later his master's degree in psychology. He married the love of his life, Doris Hopkins. She sadly predeceased him on Nov. 24, 2015, exactly two months before his death.

For many years, he was employed by the Maine State Housing Authority as an inspector.

Surviving is his daughter, Gretchen Barratt and her husband, Richard, of Rockland; Fred Merrifield of Northport, whom he thought of as a son; two grandchildren, John Frye Merrifield and his wife, Christina, of Hope, and Raymond Francis Merrifield of Rockland; two great-grandchildren, Maia and Francis Merrifield; two sisters, Martha Bickford of Rockland and Joanna Thode of Connecticut; and a brother, John Frye of Florida.

In keeping with his wishes, there will be no services.
