Fire destroys trailer in Belmont Tuesday night
BELMONT — A residential fire on Ridge Road in Belmont Tuesday night destroyed a trailer and its contents, and killed four cats, according to Fire Chief Ron Harford Wednesday morning.
Harford said the Morrill fire chief happened to be across the street from the Nancy Wood residence, discovered her trailer was in flames and responded first to the fully involved structure fire, which was called in to Waldo County Regional Communications.
Wood was in the hospital at the time, having sustained a medical issue a week ago, and a young couple in their 20s, her grandchildren, was staying there, caring for Wood's three cats and their kitten.
"The couple took off for the store and came back and it was on fire," said Harford. "They lost everything, including the four cats, and they had no insurance."
He said the cause of the fire is undetermined, due to the complete destruction of the trailer, down to its footings.
As many as 30 firefighters from Belmont, Morrill, Belfast and Searsmont responded. Harford said there were seven apparatus on scene, along with Belmont's Rescue/First Responder. He said there were no injuries.
The home was on Ridge Road, off Back Belmont Road.
Harford said the scene was cleared in about two hours, and that the American Red Cross was helping the family out.
"If anyone wants to donate to the family, they can drop it off at the fire station and call me at 322-7362, and I'll get it to the right people," said Harford.
