Fierce blizzard, biting cold give way to fun in the snow
MIDCOAST — The snow plowers — town, state and guys in the business — were out all night Saturday, Jan. 29, into Sunday afternoon, cleaning up after the coastal blizzard deposited more than a foot, up to 18 inches in some spots, of fresh powder.
The Camden Snow Bowl opened its whole mountain, all the of the trails and the glades, to skiers, who descended onto the hill as soon as it opened at 9 a.m., Sunday. Cars were parked in the baseball and football field, along the road, and even down along Hosmer Pond Road at the Snow Bowl entrance.
In other parts of town, snowshoers and cross-country skiers took to golf courses and into the woods, while even more snapped leashes on their dogs and walked the snowy roads. Where the sledding was good, children gathered to pack down trails.
Snowblower owners were busy cutting straight rows through the snow, clearing driveways and front entrances around their houses. Then, there was the shoveling... a lot of shoveling.
While the nor’easter pulled out of the area in the very early hours of Sunday morning, the winds remained strong and sharp, causing snow to drift into deep piles where the landscape was exposed.
Snow removal crews made quick work of clearing the roads, and the persistently cold temperatures kept any melting to a minimum, although the sun burst up over the eastern sky with bright intensity Sunday morning.
