Father arrested after infant treated for broken bones
BELFAST — A Northport man was arrested Dec. 23 after bringing his infant to the Waldo County General emergency room for treatment. Hospital staff became suspicious of the man due to the nature of the injuries suffered by his 11-week-old baby and alerted law enforcement.
Sergeant Nick Oettinger and Deputy Wiley McVety, of the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene. There they learned the child was being treated for serious injuries, including broken bones.
The child was transported by Lifeflight of Maine from Waldo County General to a facility in Portland for further treatment of their injuries.
Waldo County Sheriff’s Office Detective Gerald Lincoln was contacted by Oettinger and McVety, and responded to the ER to continue the investigation.
Due to the significance of the child’s injuries, Maine State Police Detective Benjamin Sweeney also responded to the scene, according to a media report.
Police said that Neil Legasse, 19, had allegedly abused the infant multiple times over the course of several days, leaving the child with broken bones amongst other injuries.
Lagasse was arrested and charged with aggravated assault and assault. He was transported to Waldo County Correctional Center where he has been held without bail pending arraignment.
