Doris Frances Philbrook Grant, obituary

ROCKLAND – Doris Frances Philbrook Grant, 81, died following a long gallant battle with declining health, Thursday, March 15, 2018 at Sussman House in Rockport.
Born on Vinalhaven, March 16, 1936, she was the daughter of Charles and Ruth Chandler Philbrook. After graduating from Vinalhaven High School in 1954, she moved to Rockland, taking a job as a telephone operator.

Through mutual friends, Doris met Lewis Grant and the two were married on July 14, 1957. In 1960 the couple welcomed their first child, a son, Peter and later their daughter Lisa in 1965.
Doris enjoyed a life filled with love, many wonderful friends and her church family. Doris always had a smile on her face, even as she endured many years of declining health. She quietly gave up her battle on March 15. Doris is survived by her husband Lewis of Rockland; her son Peter and his wife Kathryn of Waldoboro; her daughter Lisa and her husband Larry McCarthy of Sanford; her grandchildren, Matthew and Michael McCarthy of Sanford, Tracy McCarthy of Portland, Ryan Smith of Pittsfield, Sarah McDonald of Bath; great-grandchildren, Owen and Ava McDonald of Bath; her sister Madelyn Hildings brothers, Harold Philbrook, Lawrence Philbrook and his wife Leanette, all of Vinalhaven; as well as many niece and nephews.

Family and friends are invited to visit from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., Monday, March 19, 2018 at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland. A celebration of her life will be held at 12 p.m. (noon), Tuesday, March 20, 2018, at Littlefield Memorial Baptist Church, One Waldo Avenue, Rockland. The Reverend Mark Adolphsen will officiate. Interment will be held in the spring.
