Doris Charlotte Johnson, obituary
ROCKPORT — Doris Charlotte Johnson of Rockport, passed away peacefully at home on Oct. 25, 2024 at the age of 105.
She was born in Richmond Hill, Queens, New York on Dec. 30, 1918 to Charles and Christina Tomiczek. She had one older sister, Viola, who predeceased her. Doris graduated from Richmond Hill High School in 1937. After high school, she went to secretarial school at Pace College in New York City. Her first job was a legal secretary for a law firm in Manhattan.
Doris later worked for the Lake Tankers Corp in Manhattan. She married Donald H Johnson from Rockport, Maine in 1947. They lived in Queens Village, New York in the 1950’s having 2 children, Stuart and Claire. She was a Cub Scout Den Mother. The family moved to Cranbury, NJ in the 1960’s. She worked part time as a secretary at the Family Service Agency in Hightstown, New Jersey and she was a member of the local Bridge Club. In 1970, Doris’ family made their last move to her husband’s family home in Rockport. The family spent every summer vacation in Rockport up till that time.
Doris’ hobbies are gardening, bird-watching, painting and she spent many years raising orchids. She won first place one year at the juried art show at the Maine Lobster Festival with a pastoral landscape. Doris was also a member of the Rockport Garden Club and volunteered at Merryspring. At the age of 103 she was awarded the Boston Cane by the Town of Rockport for being the oldest resident of the town.
Doris’ husband Don pre-deceased her in 2015.
Doris is survived by her son, Stuart C Johnson (former daughter-in-law Geralyn S. Johnson) of Rockport; her daughter, Claire J. Orwig (husband Dean L. Orwig) of Rockport, and Indianapolis, Indianapolis; grandsons; Karl H. Orwig of Rockport, and Miles S. Orwig (partner Caroline W Wamae) of Lowell, Massachusetts; and her great-grandson, Lincoln M. Orwig of Lowell, Massachusetts.
Our family would like to express our appreciation to the MaineHealth Home Health and Hospice for the care they gave Doris in her last months. We would also like to thank the staff at the Homestead in Cushing for the care they provided to Doris during her respite visits over the last several years.
