CAMDEN — The season has started for the Camden Snow Bowl middle school ski team is underway and the team is experiencing success through four alpine races and three nordic races. 

The team’s roster includes middle school skiers in sixth through eighth grades from schools ranging from Hampden to Islesboro to Damariscotta with Jason Hearst, Weber Roberts and Alex Cohen as coaches. 

The team has a current roster of 30 racers with some athletes just beginning to hone their technique in gates along with some seasoned veterans looking to build on past experience and boost their craft.

To begin the season, the young skiers partnered with the Pen Bay YMCA in early November for dry land training focused on strength, agility and balance. 

“One interesting dimension of the middle school race program is the integration of a nordic component whereby athletes also learn nordic skate and classic techniques, in addition to the downhill alpine competition component,” said Roberts. “The CSB race program is one of the few in the state that integrate these two ski disciplines: ‘skimeistering’ in their program in hopes of fostering a love for skiing — no matter whether on lift serviced terrain or a scenic woods trail.”

Jan. 7: Sugarloaf Mountain

The Camden Snow Bowl team opened the season with a giant slalolm event at Sugarloaf Mountain against the Sugarloaf Area and Mount Ararat ski teams.

Jan. 11: Kent’s Hill

The Camden Snow Bowl team competed Saturday, Jan. 11 against 11 team teams from around the state in Marlee’s Race, a fundraising event honoring a Fayette teenager killed by school gun violence. 

“Temps were in the 50’s but the course held up extremely well and the whole team got to use the new electric rope tow at Kent’s Hill school that was installed this year,” said Roberts. 

The boys team placed fifth and the girls finished tied for third place.

Jan. 25: Camden Snow Bowl

The Camden Snow Bowl team competed Saturday, Jan. 25 on its home course by hosting a “Race to the Sea” giant slalom event against teams from Oxford Hills, Maranacook, Farmington and Auburn.

The teams raced from the the bottom of the pitch on Mussel Ridge to the lodge.

“The course held up really well despite a lack of natural snow and many of the competitors were able to get a run or two on the Toboggan chute after the race,” said Roberts.

The Camden Snow Bowl team finished first and the boys finished fifth.
