Camden Snow Bowl middle school race team captures boys Alpine Class A combined championship

The final events of the Maine State Ski Championships, Alpine Giant Slalom and Nordic Classic, were held at Black Mountain on an extremely cold day that saw wind chill temperatures plunge to 32 below Fahrenheit. The Maine Junior Ski League comprises 12 teams from mostly western Maine middle schools and ski areas. The State Championships are spread over two days. Day one was held at the Camden Snow Bowl for the first time. Most of the Camden Snow Bowl skiers participate as skimeisters meaning they compete in all four events, Nordic, Classic, Freestyle and Alpine.
Slalom and Giant Slalom. Four of them scored in the top 10, a difficult task.
"Today Michael Frampton captured the Giant Slalom title, meaning he won both the slalom and giant slalom events,” said coach Weber Roberts, in a news release. “This is a consistency I have rarely seen in a ski racer. With the result today, Micheal has won every event that we participated in with the exception of one. His strong skiing was the foundation upon which the team built a victory.
“We have a group of seventh-graders who are all capable of scoring in the top 10, and today was great evidence of that. Devon Smith, who has been skiing fifth, sixth or seventh for the team, showed up today and tied for ninth place in the GS, his best result of the season. That was just great to see as a coach."
Caellen Roberts had the third fastest run of the day but fell in the first run pushing him back into the 13th spot. Ethan Andrus had similar problems with the icy course but both boys hung onto their finishes to help boost the team, scoring along with Rhys White. The Camden Race team is made up of boys and girls from area middle schools and trains in the competition program at the Snow Bowl.
This is the second year that the team has moved into the A division and the team has fared extremely well, wining the girls alpine combined last year and now the boys alpine combined this year.
On the girls side: Isabelle Manahan captured 10th place honors, Annabelle Williams came in 19th, and Charlotte Taylor finished 35th. Although the girls did not have enough members to officially place, all three participated as Skimeisters and did extremely well.
"Isabelle and Annabelle showed a lot of toughness this year and were able to use their excellent alpine results to parlay a very strong showing in the Skimeisters,” said assistant coach Mike White. “Charlotte Taylor, sixth grade also saw a marked improvement throughout the season and really skied well on a tough GS course in the finals.”
Tommy Bancroft, Oxford Hills, won both the Nordic classic and Nordic Freestyle race, finished fourth in the slalom and third in the GS to take the skimeister boys top honors with nine points. Bailey Coates of Spruce Mountain, finished in fourth in slalom and freestyle, first in GS and 11th in Classic to take the overall girls skimeister award with 20 points.
