ROCKPORT — The Camden Hills varsity girls soccer team is believed to have set a state record for consecutive games going unbeaten with its narrow 1-0 victory Tuesday, Sept. 21 over Mount Ararat, good for the program’s 69th game since suffering a loss.

Coming into the contest, the Windjammers were sporting a 67-0-1 record courtesy a trio of wins this season over Lewiston, Mount Blue and Hampden Academy.

Through the end of the 2019 season, the Windjammers’ streak stood at 65, courtesy a 64-0-1 record. (Results from preseason scrimmages and conference championship games do not count towards the streak, according to the Maine Principals Association.)

There is no official list detailing unbeaten streaks of soccer teams in the state, but extensive research conducted by penbaypilot.com determined Gorham held the record for longest unbeaten streak in any classification of high school girls soccer in the state.

From 2005 to 2008, Gorham compiled an unbeaten streak of 68 games in regular season and postseason play. Gorham lost its season opener in 2005 (17-1 record), had one tie in 2006 (17-0-1) and 2007 (17-0-1), and lost in the state championship game in 2008 (17-1).

The picture is not as clear for what the previous unbeaten streak record stood at.

It is known Mount Ararat held the streak prior to Gorham from 1991-1994 and that Waterville held the streak from 1981-1984.

When those streaks began and ended, however, are not clear due to missing game coverage.

Waterville’s streak ended somewhere between 42-47 games with the streak starting somewhere between the team’s 11th and 14th game of the 1981 season. (The 1981 season did not comprise of 18-game schedules as girls soccer was still in its early stages in the state.)

Waterville posted undefeated 17-0 and 18-0 seasons in 1982 and 1983 and then saw the streak snapped between the 12th and 14th game of the 1984 season.

Mount Ararat either surpassed or matched Waterville’s record when composing a streak of 45-47 wins.

Mount Ararat’s streak started in 1991 somewhere between the team’s eighth and 10th game of the season. Mount Ararat posted records of 16-0-2 in 1992 and 17-0-1 in 1993 before the streak was snapped during the fourth game of the 1994 season.
