The directors of the Camden Area Youth Seamanship Program have appointed Scott Norman as Program Manager for the 2021 summer.

CAYSP,  through the Camden Yacht Club, sustains a strong tradition of experiential youth sailing. The program focuses on skills, safety and having fun on the water. Students can build a lifelong love of the water through sailing or hone their racing skills from U.S. Sailing Association certified instructors.

The program is available to all children in the Camden area regardless of the ability to pay. There are still openings and scholarships available for this summer.

Scott Norman is a marine professional specializing in junior sailing programs. He previously served as the Director of Intercollegiate Sailing at Eckerd College, where he also served as the full time varsity head coach.

He also was the founding executive director/head coach of the U.S. Optimist National Team, when he led 25 international teams for United States Optimist Dinghy Association.

Norman has prior program director experience at Norfolk Yacht and Country Club, Lauderdale Yacht Club and Lake Forest Sailing, as well as management experience with Harken Yacht Equipment in product development and sales.

He grew up in Des Moines, Iowa, and currently resides in Lake Forest, Illinois, with his wife Meredith and two children, Everett, 8, and Hunter, ). Some of his interests include tennis, running, skiing, time with family and an occasional boat restoration project.

“We are very pleased to welcome Scott to Camden Harbor,” said the directors, in a news release. “We hope you will grab this opportunity to have your young sailor learn from one of the best and his team. While Scott brings an exceptional youth sailing and racing education focus to this program, CAYSP also runs an all day ‘Land & Sea’ summer camp program- an interdisciplinary summer camp that gives students an opportunity to learn and play in Camden harbor and on land as well. Hiking Mt. Battie, visiting Curtis Island, intertidal exploration, exploring Penobscot Bay by power boat, team building challenges, scavenger hunts, STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math) activities, and sailing are a few of the things students can expect to experience in this interdisciplinary course.”

Courses and information about CAYSP can be found on camdenyachtclub.org.
