UNION – Bertha Mary Fryman, 93, known to some as Mary and some to Bertha, died peacefully, Saturday, April 7, 2018 at Pen Bay Medical Center in Rockport.

Born in Rockland, April 26, 1924, she was the daughter of John and Joanna Chester Dodge.  Educated locally, she attended Rockland schools until the eighth grade, later graduating from Union High School, class of 1943.

Following high school, Mary was employed at Van Baalens for 12 years and later with the fish processing plants in Rockland.

On December 15, 1955, Mary married Ervin ‘Stretch’ Fryman in Scarborough.  A devoted wife and homemaker, she spent her time caring for her husband.  Together they enjoyed traveling the world, visiting Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, England, Scotland, Fiji and Alaska, as well visiting all 50 United States.

She was a member of the Pioneer Grange and an active member of the Union Senior Citizens Group.  Mary had a special place in her heart for her feline friends, and especially loved the five cats she had now.

She will be sadly missed.

Predeceased by her husband and all of her siblings, Mary is survived by her niece whom she grew up with like a sister, Mary Carver, of Union; her great-niece Kathy Carver, of Union; her great-nephews, William ‘Bill’ Carver, of Union, David Carver, of Bradford; as well as other nieces, many cousins and extended family members.

Mary’s family has chosen to remember her life privately.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Pope Memorial Humane Society, P.O. Box 1294, Rockland, Maine 04841.
