Barton W. Wood, service and obituary

A memorial gathering for family and friends of Barton W. Wood, 87, who died on October 12, 2021, will be held Saturday, May 7, 2022, at 9:30 a.m., Merryspring Nature Center, in Camden.

CAMDEN — Barton W. Wood, age 87, of Camden, passed away October 12, 2021.

Bart was born on January 26, 1934, in Newton, Massachusetts, and was the son of John and Dorothy (Patterson) Wood. He graduated from Tufts University in 1956. The following year, he married Priscilla (Bourne) Wood and embarked on a 34-year career with Scott Paper Company.

In his retirement years, they moved from Wallingford, Pennsylvania, to Camden, where he gave back to the community through a variety of volunteer activities. He was honored in the 2000-2001 Town Report for his service as Camden’s Tree Warden for ten years, his chairmanship of the Camden Conservation Commission for six years, his participation in the Library Grounds and Harbor Park Restoration Committee for four years, and his participation in Camden’s Economic Development Committee.

He was a 30-year volunteer with Merryspring Nature Center, serving as Trustee, President, and Treasurer. He served as a volunteer firefighter and as president and director of the South Media Fire Company in Wallingford, Pennsylvania, and also volunteered with the Camden Fire Department. He was an avid reader, gardener, and lifelong birder.

Bart is survived by his wife of 64 years, Priscilla Wood; his three children, Julia (Geoffrey) Coleman of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Jeffrey (Mary) Wood of West Grove, Pennsylvania, and James (Dana) Wood of Ashburn, Virginia; his six grandchildren, Katherine Coleman, Andrew (Michelle) Coleman, Jena Wood, Jonathan Wood, Kari Wood, and Christopher Wood; and his brother, Robert (Janet) Wood.

A celebration of his life will be announced in the spring. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to Merryspring Nature Center or the charity of your choice.
