Author Amy Fradel to discuss “Four Acres under Slavnik: a Slovenian Migration Story”

Event has passed

BELFAST — Local author Amy Fradel will discuss her new book, Four Acres under Slavnik: a Slovenian Migration Story, on Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2024, at 6:30 p.m., at the Belfast Free Library, 106 High Street, in Belfast.

In Four Acres under Slavnik, Fradel takes the reader on an epic journey that spans two world wars, the Italian occupation of Primorska, the Great Depression, the early years of communist Yugoslavia, and immigrant experiences through the eyes of a Slovenian family. It is the intimate story of ordinary people facing the challenges of life in the new country and of those striving to survive in the old country during cataclysmic times.

What began as a personal exploration of Fradel’s family immigrant history became a deep dive into global issues surrounding immigration, racism, and the rise of authoritarian regimes that the world still grapples with today while it tells a captivating story of Primorskans who lived it, according to the Library, in a news release.

Amy Fradel is a nurse practitioner and writer who lives in Midcoast Maine and visits her extended family in Slovenia often. She is the 2022 winner of the Slovenian Union of Literary Competition.

This talk will take place in the Abbott Room and is free and open to all.

Books will be available to purchase at the program.
