2026 Special Olympics Maine's Summer Games, June 5-7 in Orono
Special Olympics Maine's 2026 State Summer Games will take place this weekend, June 5-7, at the University of Maine, in Orono. More than 2,200 athletes and coaches from every county in Maine will participate in a weekend full of competition, celebration, and community. With the addition of volunteers, families, and fans, the event is expected to draw over 3,000 people to Orono.
Athletes, ranging in age from 7 to over 70, will compete in sports like bocce and track & field, while the Young Athletes Festival on Friday morning offers children ages 2–7 a chance to participate in developmentally appropriate, inclusive play and fitness activities.
"This event is the culmination of months of hard work and training for our athletes," said Special Olympics Maine, in a news release. "But the State Summer Games are about more than just sport—they are about friendship, health, and community."
Athletes will stay in dorms, visit the Olympic Village (hosted by youth leaders), receive free health screenings through the Healthy Athletes program, and enjoy social events like the Saturday night dance.
