The “big” Exhibition Hall at Union Fair (August 5-August 9) is promoting the 11th annual quilt raffle, themed around “Maine Sea Life.”

This Exhibition Hall is the home of the displays of art, photography, quilts, fancy work, flowers, and vegetables. In addition, booths showcase local Granges, specific needlework, local Historical Society’s and other local groups.

"We are also proud to house the Ed Barrett collection of hand-made miniature farm and logging equipment," said Rick Butler, in a news release.

Organizers are soliciting 12 ½ inch squares from interested quilters to make up this quilt. The style of the square and the technique used is entirely up to the quilter, keeping in mind the theme: “Maine Sea Life.” The quilter should also keep the design/pattern within the 12 ½ inch square to allow for the ¼ inch seam allowance. Edges should not be hemmed. Blocks will be incorporated into the quilt as space permits. Please, no embellishments such as pins or buttons. The quilter(s) should not put their name on the front of the block. 

Each square will be numbered as they are placed in the quilt and will be voted upon by visitors to the Fair. The three squares with the most votes will receive a monetary prize and rosette.

The quilt itself will be on display at the Exhibit Hall during the Fair and will be awarded to the lucky ticket holder at 3 p.m. on Sunday, August 9. Tickets will be $1 each or 6 for $5.

"We are looking for interactive and attractive displays that will educate the public," said Butler.

The focus for all Maine Fairs this year is “The Wonderful World of Poultry."
