Not your grampa’s (or gramma’s) Rotary

Sun, 07/25/2021 - 8:15pm

Several years ago, members of the West Bay Rotary club recognized an opportunity to expand the accessibility of membership in Rotary International by creating a Satellite;

The Satellite Club of West Bay Rotary meets at 5:15pm on the second and fourth Thursday at Flatbread Pizza Rockport - (thank you Bobby Morgan!), and since the club’s formation in 2018, have organized some fun events, completed community service projects and donated funds to several worthy non-profit organizations in our community.

In addition to the fundraising, ``So, you Think you Know Maine?" Trivia Night at the Camden Snowbowl in January 2020, two Cornhole tournaments and a Raffle of an original J Braugh painting, the members have participated in roadside cleanups, painting the bathhouse at Laite Beach, painting picnic tables in Camden parks like the Village Green, Harbor Park, Town Landing and Laite Beach and have also participated in West Bay Rotary projects like Toboggan Nationals parking, Christmas Tree and Wreath Sales.

All of this has been accomplished by a group of 8 dedicated charter members of the Satellite. They are Peter Lindquist, JP Fecteau, Cindy Allen, Abraham Dugal, Heidi Karod, Mark Bergelin, Shelly Butler and Sarah Ruef-Lindquist.

Speakers at their meetings have included David Wright, filmmaker and resident of Appleton, Elias Thomas, past District Governor of neighboring Rotary District 7780, and representatives of organizations including the Southern Poverty Law Center, Lifeflight of Maine, OUT Maine, AIO Foodpantry and others.

Organizations that have received funds from the Satellite's fundraising efforts include Window Dressers, New Hope for Women, AIO Foodpantry and OUT Maine.

The current chair, Peter Lindquist, is working on organizing the group to help within the next year with a Community Build by Window Dressers which creates affordable, removable and reusable window inserts to promote energy efficiency in peoples' homes. When possible, the group would like to host another Trivia Night.
