Getting started again on the road to recovery is sometimes the hardest part for a cancer survivor. That’s why the Y offers LIVESTRONG at the YMCA. This free 12-week small group program for adult cancer survivors, family members and caregivers provides a structured, supportive program to encourage participants as they make the transition from medical care to establishing new healthy lifestyle habits in their home and community. The goals are:

  • Reduce the severity of treatment side effects
  • Prevent unwanted weight changes
  • Improve energy levels
  • Support positive self esteem
  • Incorporate physical activity that is safe for each survivor
  • Help build muscle strength
  • Increase flexibility and endurance
  • Improve functional ability

In addition to the benefits of physical activity, the program offers a sense of connection to fellow survivors.

Participation in LIVESTRONG at the YMCA is often a cancer survivor’s first step in the road toward recovery.  Individuals meet twice a week for 75 minutes using traditional exercise methods to ease back into fitness and help further their wellness journey.

The Penobscot Bay YMCA’s next session is starting March 22.  Please call the Y at 236-3375 and speak with Sandy Bodamer if you are interested in joining the LIVESTRONG at the YMCA program.

At the Y, we are for youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.
