Waldo County YMCA announces Youth Board member opportunity
WALDO COUNTY — The Waldo County YMCA is launching a new Youth Board Member program, offering high school students a unique opportunity to gain leadership experience and provide valuable youth perspective to the YMCA’s Board of Directors. This program is designed to engage teens in nonprofit governance, strategic planning, and community service, helping to shape the future of the YMCA and its impact in the region.
The YMCA is now accepting applications for its inaugural Youth Board Member position, open to high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors. The selected teen will serve a three-year term, beginning in their sophomore year and continuing through their senior year. The YMCA’s goal is to have one new youth member join the Board each year, ensuring a fresh perspective while maintaining continuity in the program.
Youth Board members will be expected to attend a minimum of four Board meetings annually, participate in strategic planning efforts, and contribute to YMCA community initiatives. They will also have the chance to work closely with a Board mentor, gaining hands-on leadership experience and insight into the operations of a nonprofit organization.
Key Responsibilities
- -Attend at least four Board meetings per year.
- -Collaborate with Board members and staff on community projects.
- -Present at two meetings each year, sharing insights and perspectives.
- -Help recruit and mentor new Youth Board members.
- -Uphold the YMCA’s values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.
This program offers teens the chance to make a tangible impact on their community while building skills in communication, leadership, and teamwork. The Youth Board Member will be an active, non-voting member, providing input into strategic decisions and community initiatives, while also learning about nonprofit leadership in a supportive, collaborative environment.
Julie Morse, Chair of the Waldo County YMCA Governance Committee, emphasized the importance of this initiative.
“We are thrilled to offer this program, which allows young people to take on leadership roles within the community while gaining invaluable experience," said Morse, in a news release. "The YMCA has always been committed to fostering growth, and this new opportunity is just one of the ways we support youth development.”
Interested candidates can learn more and find the application on the Waldo County YMCA website’s Board of Directors page. The deadline for applications is December 20, 2024. After the application period closes, interviews will be scheduled for eligible candidates.
"This is a fantastic opportunity for local high school students who are passionate about community involvement and eager to contribute to the YMCA’s mission of strengthening the community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility," said the YMCA.
