Swimming advisory issued for Chickawaukie Pond following water testing
Until further notice, swimming at Johnson Memorial Park's Chickawaukie Lake is not advised due to high E. coli levels.
E. coli levels can increase due to rain runoff that pushes wildlife fecal matter and other ground substances into watersheds.
Water samples of regional swimming areas are sent weekly to a lab for quality testing. Following recent testing of Chickawaukie, the City of Rockland sent out a June 25, 2026, CivicAlert notification advising against swimming at that body of water, Johnson Memorial Park at Chickawaukie Pond, at 151 Lake View Drive.
"We will send out another alert once levels are safe," said the City.
The Maine Department of Environmental Protection has created a new Lake Scorecard program to help the public be more aware of advisories. This scorecard can be found via the Lake Stewards of Maine website and following the search your lake of preference.
Maine DEP Lake Scorecard
The Scorecard summarizes many types of lake data into one color-coded graphic, based on current conditions or trends in the lake's health. The color is indicative of an overall condition assessment of each category: blue = good, yellow = fair, and red = poor. Grey indicates there is not enough data for an assessment.
A small number of lakes have more than one hydrologic basin, and there will be scorecards for each basin.
