Lash, Griebel named Midcoast Hall of Fame Athletes of the Year

ROCKLAND — Out of a field of 10 finalists, two Midcoast high school athletes have been awarded the Midcoast Sports Hall of Fame Female and Male Athletes of the Year. The Awards were presented at the Midcoast Sports Hall of Fame Annual Banquet on October 16, held at the Rockland Elks Club in Rockland.

The Female Athlete of the Year is Abby Lash of Medomak Valley High School, and the Male Athlete of the Year is Charlie Griebel of Camden Hills Regional High School.

The selection process for this award begins in the spring with eight Midcoast high schools being requested to submit two female and two male nominees to the Midcoast Sports Hall of Fame Directors. The Midcoast schools include Oceanside, Camden Hills, Medomak Valley, Lincoln Academy, Vinalhaven, Islesboro, Boothbay Regional, and Wiscasset.

The nominees are requested to send further information to the committee, after which the committee selects five male and five female finalists to be recognized, with the eventual award winner being named at the banquet.

Lash, graduate of Medomak Valley High School in 2021. was an outstanding three sport player in soccer, basketball, and track. She was a four year varsity player in soccer and basketball, was captain her senior year in soccer, basketball, and track, MVP her senior year in soccer and basketball, and received the Medomak Valley Girls Senior Sportsmanship Award.

In soccer, Lash scored a career total 32 goals as was named by the Maine Soccer Coaches Association to the Class B All-Star Team. In basketball, she was named to the KVAC Class A South second team her sophomore year. In track, in her senior year, Lash qualified for the KVAC and State Championships in triple jump, 4x100 relay and 4x400 relay.

Lash has been active in her school community by serving on PAWS, being class historian for four years, and being on National Honor Society for two years. In the community, Lash has worked on food drives, with the Food Bank and a a local farm market. She has volunteered with youth soccer and basketball in the school system and has been a counselor and volunteer coach at summer camps for soccer and basketball.

She is attending University of Maine at Farmington this fall, majoring in Elementary Education and playing soccer and basketball.

Charlie Griebel, a 2021 Summa Cum Laude graduate of Camden Hills Regional High School, was a key four year varsity player in ice hockey and lacrosse, and was captain of both teams for his last two years. He was the Windjammer ice hockey MVP for the 2021 season in which the team won the ice hockey COVID Cup Championship. In lacrosse, Charlie was named to the All KVAC First Team and received the US Lacrosse Bob Scott Award for Maine and the US Lacrosse All Academic All American team Award.

From age five, he played ice hockey with the Maine Coast Storm Youth Hockey, winning a State Championship in 2013 (Squirts Tier III) and in 2017 (Bantam Tier III), and continued to play on the Maine Coast Storm all through high school (U18 ice hockey). Additionally, Charlie played four years of travel lacrosse with the Maine Mussels Lacrosse, and he represented Maine in Delaware on the Maine Select Lacrosse Team (summer 2020).

In his school and community, Griebel volunteered for Habitat for Humanity (2019 & 2020) and was President of the group at CHRHS. He was a member of National Honor Society his junior and senior year and received the following awards his senior year: Principal’s Leadership Award, American Legion Citizenship Award, George Washington University Book Award, and Highest Achievement in Math Award.

He is attending Franklin and Marshall College in Pennsylvania in the fall.
