    He grew up in Rockport, graduating from Rockport High School in 1953. He then enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and worked in ordnance until he was honorably discharged at the end of his three-year tour of duty.

    Scott attended Crosby High School. He worked at the Republican Journal for over 30 years and later at Mathew Brothers and New England News Clip. Scott enjoyed painting on canvas in his spare time. He also had an interest in old, classic cars. Scott was a member of First Church in Belfast.

    She married the love of her life, Raymond P. Cunningham, on June 1, 1947. They spent most of their married life in Freedom. Raymond passed away in 1972 and Merlyn relocated to Belfast a few years after that.
