Dorothy 'Dottie' C. Grant, obituary
ROCKLAND — Dorothy "Dottie" C. Grant, 84, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Thursday, October 2, 2025, at the Sussman Hospice House in Rockport.
Born in Rockland on December 26, 1940, to Edward and Dorothy Monroe Childs, Dottie was a lifelong resident of the midcoast. She graduated from Rockland High School in 1959, where she was crowned Kippe Karnival Kween during her senior year—a honor that reflected the warmth and charm she would carry throughout her life.
After graduation, Dottie ventured to Boston, embracing the excitement of city life before returning home to Maine's midcoast. It was while working at Central Maine Power that she met Stanley Grant, a fellow employee who would become her husband. They married in February 1965, and Stan soon began building their home on Samoset Road with his own hands—clearing the land and working late into the night after his regular shifts, creating the place where they would raise their family.
Dottie devoted herself wholeheartedly to raising her two children. Later, she found joy in connecting with the community as a bank teller at Camden National and Key Bank, where her friendly nature and sharp mind for numbers made her a favorite among customers.
An active and social woman, Dottie embraced life fully. She loved camping trips, attending races and car shows, and bowling in her local league where she formed lasting friendships. North Haven Island held a special place in her heart, and visits there with family and friends became treasured memories. A talented artist—though she never believed it herself—Dottie painted beautiful ocean scenes on rocks and canvas that she lovingly gave as gifts.
Her keen financial mind was matched only by her generous spirit. Dottie studied finance management and freely shared her knowledge, teaching friends how to manage and grow their own savings. But perhaps her greatest gift was her ability to forge genuine connections. She made friends effortlessly, transforming even brief encounters into deep and lasting bonds. Music was one of her greatest joys, and for the last seven or eight years, she became a beloved regular at the weekly community music events at the Sail & Power Museum, where she built yet another circle of cherished friendships through her love of live performance.
After the devastating loss of Stan at just 58 years old, Dottie found companionship and happiness with Rowland Ames and his family. His children and grandchildren brought her tremendous joy in her later years.
Dottie's gregarious personality, generous heart, and genuine love for people touched countless lives. She will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate enough to know her.
Predeceased by her husband; a sister, Judith Hallowell; and a special aunt, Madeline, who helped raise her; Dottie is survived by her children, Kelly Grant and her partner Keith Hill of Woolwich, Stephen Grant and his wife Pam of Topsham; her grandchildren, Tyler Grant and his wife Alyssa, Trevor Grant, James Hill and his wife Jewely, Logan Hill and Morgan Hill; two great-grandchildren, Brody Grant and Kaylie; a sister, Barbara Verdone and her husband Lawrence, Sr. of Virginia; a special niece, Nancy Fahkoury, with whom she had a special bond; as well as many well-loved nieces, nephews and a large loving extended family.
Family and friends are invited to visit Monday, October 13, 2025, from 3 to 5 p.m., at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland. Dottie will be laid to rest privately on North Haven Island.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Owls Head Transportation Museum, P.O. Box 277, Owls Head, Maine 04854.
