Honoring a friend on his birthday

Last run for Jeff

CAMDEN — Dusk was just beginning to settle in around the edges of Ragged Mountain Saturday afternoon, Jan. 19, as a skiers and snowboarders gathered at the top of Windjammer, the broadest middle trail at the Camden Snow Bowl, for a unique parade. Young children, the elderly, and friends of all ages in between were there to make the final run of the day to celebrate the birthday of a friend who died in November, but whose legacy remains strong.

Camden's Ragged Mountain loses a good friend.

Jeff was Camden's Director of Parks and Recreation, and his biggest responsibility was the Ragged Mountain Recreation Area, which includes not only a thriving ski operation, but Hosmer Pond, an internationally-recognized tobbogan chute, playing fields, Nordic, hiking and biking trails, and a summit that overlooks the ocean. Jeff died in a tree-cutting accident Nov. 4, leaving a large hole in community that stretches far beyond Camden town lines. The Snow Bowl attracts outdoor enthusiasts from all over, and many were at the top of Windjammer on Jan. 19 to honor Jeff, further strengthening the foundations of a remarkable mountain community.

The instructions were simple: Ski a simple S formation down the mountain.

And just as the progression began, the clouds lifted.

"Here's some light for Jeff," said Andrew Dailey, sending the skiers off down the hill.
