Following recount, tie broken between two Rockport school board candidates
On June 10, two Rockport candidates running for one three-year seat on the Five Town CSD and School Administrative District 28 boards received the same number votes each. On June 23 at 1 p.m, a recount took place at the Rockport Town Office, and Town Clerk Liz Lowe reported:
"The results were 166 for Brieanna Gutierrez and 165 for Stacey Contakos. All ballots from this election were examined by the ballot clerks and the results from the hand tally of the tie vote are attached here [see results above]".
On June 10, Stacey Contakos and Brieanna Gutierrez each received 165 votes. The third candidate, Ellen Reynolds, received 160 votes.
On June 13, Gutierrez requested a recount.
She said on June 16: "I felt it was important to confirm the results via a recount before considering asking town staff to put significant work into a special election.
"Staff in the Clerk's office have navigated a presidential election and a special election bond vote in the last 6-9 months and I do not want to ask them to manage an additional special election unless absolutely necessary, nor do I want to ask my fellow taxpayers to fund it.
"I am hopeful that the recount will resolve the issue without the need for further effort on the part of our outstanding town staff. I am also hopeful that I will be able to continue to serve our community as a board member, but regardless of the outcome I will continue to find ways to serve and support our schools, reflecting the values and beliefs I shared throughout the run up to June 10."
