UNION — A car that went off the road in Union midday Wednesday resulted in a portion of a major road being closed to traffic for about an hour, and additional support being brought in from other agencies.

Two adults complained of pain after their automobile left the eastbound lane of Heald Highway at approximately 11:50 a.m., April 17, pushing back a guardrail before continuing down a slope into a grassy area. Union Ambulance and North East Mobile Health transported the couple to Pen Bay Medical Center while Junk Yard Dog pulled the car back to the pavement and lifted it onto the wrecker bed.

In order to divert traffic around the scene via Wotton’s Mill Road and Payson Road, Union FD enlisted the help of Hope FD.

Before the crash was reported to 911 dispatchers, a Knox County Sheriff’s deputy happened to be driving through the area and encountered a group of Good Samaritans who had stopped to assist. The deputy was able to assist until Union Ambulance could arrive, and after the dust had settled, the deputy made sure to request notification to Maine Dept. of Transportation for a new section of guardrail.
