Overnight Waldoboro barn fire keeps firefighters busy

WALDOBORO —  Firefighters worked for several hours to extinguish persistent flames that destroyed a chicken barn in Waldoboro, Wednesday night.

By the time mutual aid from Warren, Washington, Union, and Friendship was requested at 11:30 p.m. for the call at 1071 Old Augusta Road, the barn was fully engulfed. Less than an hour later, it was no more than a pile of rubble.

However, flames continued to flare at each end of the long footprint of the building, including at a propane tank, forcing Waldoboro and Damariscotta fire departments to keep water aimed at the debris.

Tanker trucks from each Knox County fire department that was called to the scene continuously filled two water pools, as did Nobleboro, Bremen, and Jefferson.

By 1:25 a.m., additional manpower was requested out of Thomaston.
