In keeping with new Maine boating law, required boater safety course offered in Rockport

Wed, 04/17/2024 - 5:00pm

ROCKPORT — Maine has a new law that requires anyone born on or after January 1, 1999 to have completed a recognized boater safety and education course in order to operate a motorboat greater than 25 horsepower on Maine inland or territorial waters. Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be issued a certificate which they must carry when operating a motorboat and have available for inspection upon request by a law enforcement officer.

The Megunticook Watershed Association is working with Port Harbor Marine, the Coast Guard Auxiliary, and Inland Fish & Wildlife to present the required course locally two times this spring: Saturday, April 27 and Saturday, May 18. Both courses will be held at Port Harbor Marine in Rockport.

The April 27 course will be taught by a Coast Guard Auxiliary member and will run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with a break for lunch. The cost is $10 at the door, and class size is limited to 19 people.

The May 18 course will be taught by Inland Fish & Wildlife and will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with a small break for lunch. The class is limited to 30 people,
