Katherine McCobb York Moran, obituary
BIDDEFORD — Katherine McCobb York Moran, 82, formerly of Camden, died peacefully on July 10, 2025, in Biddeford, Maine.
Katherine (“Kathy”, "Kay") McCobb York was born in Rockland, Maine, during World War II to Philip York (of South Thomaston) and Eleanor McCobb York (of Lincolnville Center). In 1943, the year of her birth, her father was serving with the U.S. Coast Guard in Greenland, and her mother was a nurse in Camden.
Kathy's early years were spent between Massachusetts and Maine, spending summers in Spruce Head Village, where her family settled in 1951. Due to frequent zoning changes (the house was deemed in So. Thomaston one year and St. George the next), she became the proud alumnus of four one-room area schoolhouses (Bassick, Clark Island, Spruce Head, Tenant's Harbor). The family later moved to Camden, where she attended Mary E. Taylor Middle School and graduated from Camden High School in 1960.
She studied at Eastern College in Pennsylvania before earning her B.S. degree from Cornell University–New York Hospital School of Nursing in 1966. Her career in public health nursing took her to the Visiting Nurse Service of New York, the Manhattan Bowery Project (where she was head nurse at a detox unit in Manhattan's Skid Row), and the Visiting Nurse Association of Brooklyn. Life and family later took her from New York City to Washington State before returning to Maine, three kids in tow, in 1986, where she served as nursing supervisor and staff education coordinator at Camden Health Care Center for many years.
In retirement, Kathy opened her Camden home to international visitors and musicians from the Salzedo Harp Colony, hosting summer-long guests from 30 states and 16 countries. She was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Rockport and later in Saco, where she served for many years as a ward history and genealogy specialist.
Kathy is remembered for her warmth, hospitality, humor, correcting our grammar, and daily emails to her children and friends. She found joy in baking and often said her KitchenAid stand mixer (c. 1984) was among her most cherished companions. Beyond the baked goods, she was a staunch advocate for women, children and patient-centered health care.
She was predeceased by her parents; Gerald Moran, the father of her children and spouse of 9 years; and her brother, Franklin York.
She is survived by her three children, Joseph (Amanda) Moran of Newry, James Moran of New York City and his children Greer Alexandra and Matteo James, and Millicent Curran of San Francisco; her sister, Phyllis York of Austin, Texas; her sister-in-law, Joanne York of Methuen, Massachusetts; and many nieces and nephews.
There will be a gravesite dedication and memorial on Saturday, September 27, at 3 p.m., at Oak Hill Cemetery in Camden, Maine.
