Belfast Area High School shows its stuff at revamped open house

BELFAST - The parking lot of Belfast Area High School was filled on Oct. 23. The occasion wasn’t a home football game. It was the school’s open house, just a few notches more ambitious than usual.

Inside the school, student artists worked in the upstairs classrooms of the art wing while musicians performed in rotating brass and woodwind groups downstairs. Others roamed with guitars.

The hallways presented a friendly gauntlet of displays put together by the schools departments and activity groups: the Yearbook Committee, the Liberian Education Fund, Jobs for Maine Graduates, the Technology Team, the Civil Rights team and many others. Early visitors were able to peek in on a play rehearsal under way in the gym.

In a departure from past years when school staff orchestrated the open house, students — over 150 in all — were recruited to show off the accomplishments of the school.

Teachers and professionals led short sessions on the BAHS Athletics program, the Finance Authority of Maine, the BAHS Academic Team, MELMAC (formerly Maine Educational Loan Marketing Corporation) grants, opportunities at Waldo County Technical Center, planning for college, or in the case of the 9th Grade Team, planning for high school.
