Rockland closes Breakwater and nearby park to all traffic while storm batters harbor
While a significant storm is underway this afternoon and overnight, the City of Rockland is closing the Marie H. Reed Breakwater Park at the end of Samoset Road, and the Rockland Breakwater to foot and vehicle traffic. This closure will apply effective immediatly until further notice.
“Although often spectacular along the coast, wave action during and after a storm is highly unpredictable and can place one in a dangerous situation,” said Rockland Fire Chief Chris Whytock. “During the summer of 2009, a 'rogue wave' caused by an off shore tropical storm, swept numerous people from the rocks in Acadia National Park, into the ocean, tragically resulting in the death of a 7 -ear-old girl. Always be very cautious when near the ocean and be aware of high surf, massive waves, and rip tides.”
Tides are at the highest of the year in this first week of January, making it all the more reason to stay away from dangerous wave action.
