Penobscot Bay Orchestra presents free concert: The New Romantics

BELFAST and CAMDEN — The Penobscot Bay Orchestra, now in its 4th season, presents The New Romantics, a concert of music by composers Robert Schumann, Felix Mendelssohn, and Gioachino Rossini, innovative early 19th-Century composers who set the course for what would become the Romantic Era in music.
The free concert will be performed twice: Saturday, May 3, at 4 p.m., at Belfast Unitarian Universalist Church, 37 Miller Street, Belfast, Maine, 04915; and Tuesday, May 6, at 7 p.m., at John Street United Methodist Church, 98 John Street, Camden, Maine 04843.
The New Romantics program includes the opening movement from Felix Mendelssohn’s 3rd Symphony, the Scottish. Local cellist and PBO member Kristi Spilde joins the orchestra as soloist in Robert Schuman’s Cello Concerto in A Minor. Also included on the program are Rossini's La Gazza Ladra (Thieving Magpie) Overture and augmenting the program are 2 short movements from string quartets by siblings Felix Mendelssohn and Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel.
This free concert will last about one hour. Voluntary donations will be collected at the door to support the orchestra’s Youth Chamber Music Program, starting in Belfast this summer.
PBO Youth Chamber Music Program
This summer, PBO will begin offering a Youth Chamber Music Program to students ages 11-14 who wish to dive into playing music together. PBO flutist and teacher Hannah Morris will lead these weekly workshops for young musicians to experience great music, play together, learn about expression, balance, and technique, build friendships, and expand their own musical horizons. The 9-week summer program starts in June and concludes with a summer concert at the Belfast Unitarian Universalist Church, 37 Miller Street, Belfast. Tuition is intentionally low and subsidized by the Penobscot Bay Orchestra. Full scholarships are available.
