Lindsey Brook Bridge officially becomes part of the Rockland Harbor Trail

ROCKLAND — The sun was bright on this crisp Sunday morning, Jan. 29. The small crowd had gathered at the head of the Thorndike parking lot to watch the ribbon cutting that officially opened the Lindsey Brook bridge as part of the Rockland Harbor Trail. The bridge is another piece of the puzzle that will hopefully one day connect the Rockland Breakwater to the South End by one continuous trail.
Harbor Committee chair Louise MacLellan-Ruf called the bridge’s dedication a momentous occasion.
"Bit by bit, step by step I think the Rockland Harbor Trail is helping transform not only the external community that faces the harbor, but the internal community as well," she said. "This is the best committee I have ever worked on. We could just not do better."
The bridge was made possible by an anonymous donation of $102,000. At the time of the dedication the donor remained adamant that their anonymity remain in place.
Rockland Councilor Valli Geiger said the bridge was a huge step.
"I walk around other communities in Maine like Brunswick and Portland and they have these incredible walks along the water,: she said. "And people are constantly using them. This takes us just a little closer into turning our harbor into a place we can walk beside."
Gordon Page, who serves both as the director of Rockland Maine Street Inc. and on the Harbor Committee, said the anonymous donation was a wonderful gift.
"They don't want to be recognized, but hopefully they understand how important their gift to the city of Rockland is. And not just Rockland, but to anybody who will come to Rockland and use the Harbor Trail. It's great and I hope others will be inspired to give their support to the city of Rockland," Page said.
On Jan. 19, the 60-foot bridge linking the Rockland Ferry Terminal and the Thorndike parking lot was lowered into place. The bridge spans Lindsey Brook and private property.
MacLellan-Ruf said an important part of the project was getting permission for an easement across those properties. She said the easement was granted by Everett Spears.
The $101,000 donation is the largest the city has ever received, according to MacLellan-Ruf.
Rockland began work on its Harbor Trail in the 1990s. MacLellan-Ruf said they have been working on it foot-by-foot.
