Albert Brackett, obituary
ROCKLAND — Albert Brackett, 83, died March 7, 2016, at his home after an extended period of declining health.
Born in Peabody, Mass., on April 15, 1932, he was the son of Pearley A. and Helen Post Brackett. During the early years of his life Albert lived in Concord, N.H., before moving to Warren while in the seventh-grade. He began the eighth-grade in Rockland, and ultimately graduated Rockland High School with the Class of 1950.
That same year, he enlisted in the United States Air Force, and after training at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas, Albert served two years in Japan. At the time of his discharge, he had earned the rank of sergeant.
Returning to civilian life, he married the love of his life, Marion F. Hoover, in Concord, N.H., on Dec. 10, 1954. The Bracketts made their home in Rockland.
In earlier years he worked with Albert McFarland Construction Company, building several local fine homes. For several years he also worked at Morse’s Boat Shop in Thomaston; and for the next 11 years Albert applied his cabinetmaking skills at Bald Mountain Boat Works in Camden. His final years of boat building were served at O. Lie-Nielson Boat Works, on construction of the sailing yacht, Whitehawk.
Throughout his career, as well as practicing his trade as a fine carpenter and cabinet maker, Albert also built his own home and operated his Old County Road farm. At times he kept 120 head of cattle and 48 milking cows. Following the demise of the cattle and dairy business, he spent several years as a long-haul truck driver. Until recent times, he continued work on a part-time basis, building custom specialty pieces and rowing skiffs in his shop.
Albert was a member of the Winslow-Holbrook-Merritt American Legion Post No. 1 in Rockland.
In addition to his wife of 62 years, Marion; Albert is survived by four sons and their wives, Richard A. and Lois Brackett of Brooksville, Fla., Brian L. and Judy Brackett, and Robert D. Brackett, all of Hope, and Mark A. and Sherry Brackett of Owls Head; and three grandchildren, Ashley Anne Brackett, Jacob Brackett and Jordan Brackett.
A graveside service will be held Monday, March 14 at 10 a.m. at Achorn Cemetery on Old County Road in Rockland.
