Camden police say woman burglarized home while resident, small child slept upstairs
CAMDEN — Police arrested a Camden woman Sept. 9 following the break-in of a downtown Camden home. Police said Sarah Havener, 30, allegedly stole multiple items from the home while the resident and a young child were sleeping upstairs.
Camden Police Detective Curt Andrick said officers obtained a search warrant Sept. 8 and allegedly found enough evidence in Havener's Pearl Street home to charge her with burglary, felony theft, violation of bail, burglary of a motor vehicle, possession of schedule W drugs and trafficking in prison contraband.
The burglary occurred late Friday night and early Saturday morning, said Andrick, as the victim and the child were asleep. He said numerous items were taken, including electronics, appliances, clothing, children's toys, food, make-up and cosmetics.
A car at the resident was also burglarized, Andrick said, with electronic equipment stolen.
Police believe Havener was acting alone and said witnesses helped identify her.
"She was seen in the area, and identified," said Andrick.
As a result of the search warrant, Camden police recovered items that allegedly connected Havener to the burglary, including electronics, clothing and children's toys.
Havener, who remains at Knox County Jail in Rockland, was on bail for charges related to a previous theft of a local business, Andrick said. According to Andrick, Havener had allegedly taken a woman's wallet, while she was being interviewed by the woman for a job.
Camden police officers Tim Davis and Jeff Boudreau, as well as Maine Drug Enforcement Agency investigators assisted with the investigation.
In July, Havener had been charged with allegedly shoplifting from a Camden merchant, stealing a wallet and using the victim's credit card to make purchases at a variety of local businesses.
Camden Police Officer Allen Weaver charged Havener with two counts of theft and four counts of misuse of identification. Havener also had two previous theft convictions.
According to court documents, Weaver responded to a shoplifting complaint at Renys Department Store in Camden on July 7, after Havener was caught allegedly concealing clothing under the clothes she was wearing and attempting to leave the store without paying for them. The store manager reported to police that Havener purchased some items with a credit card that did not have her name on it.
Havener told the cashier the credit card belonged to her grandmother, but when police questioned her about the card, she said that she could not find it, said the police report.
A few hours later, a woman from Cushing notified police that her wallet was missing. She told police that she had her wallet on her desk while she had been interviewing a woman in Camden, whom she was planning to hire.
At first, the victim thought she had misplaced her wallet, but when she checked her credit card statement she noticed charges made to her card that she did not make or authorize. Weaver asked the victim the name of the woman she had interviewed to see if there was any possible connection to the shoplifting incident earlier that day. The victim reported the interviewee's name was Sarah Havener, according to court documents.
The charges on the victim's stolen credit card totaled approximately $350. The purchases were made at Renys, Walmart, Family Dollar Store, Maine Smoke Shop, McDonalds and Maritime Farms.
Weaver was able to confirm that Havener allegedly made the purchases by reviewing video footage and receipts from the businesses.
Havener made her initial court appearance July 17 for that crime and was released on $1,500 bail. She is not to return to Renys or have any contact with the victim as part of her bail conditions.
Havener's next court appearance is scheduled for Sept. 18 in Knox County Unified Court.
