Dan Horton Invitational swim meet a splash for WCY Bluefish
The Waldo County YMCA (WCY) Bluefish swim team hosted a successful and spirited Dan Horton Invitational Swim Meet on May 17th, bringing together 67 enthusiastic participants ranging in age from 18 to an impressive 88 years old. The event, held at the Tom and Sally Savage Natatorium at the WCY, proved to be a fantastic display of community spirit and athletic prowess.
More than just a competition, the invitational served as an important fundraiser for the WCY Bluefish team. Thanks to the generous support of the swimmers and spectators, the event raised $2,314. These crucial funds will directly support the Bluefish program by helping to maintain their excellent coaching staff and ensuring that participation fees remain affordable for local families, making the benefits of competitive swimming accessible to a wider range of children and youth in the community.
The meet showcased a wide array of talent and dedication, with swimmers competing in 18 formal events, capped off with a fun round of freestyle relays. The camaraderie and sportsmanship displayed throughout the day highlighted the positive impact of the Bluefish program and the strong sense of community it fosters.
The Meet’s namesake, Dan Horton, who helped found the WCY and was one of the first swim coaches, swam in a number of events and played matchmaker for the relays. His energy and excitement about swimming permeated the event.
For almost a dozen competitors, this was their first meet ever. In January, Katie Day decided to take up swimming. She approached Coach Cooney for some lessons and soon was practicing regularly with the Masters. She credits Cooney for her progress and for encouraging her to sign up for the meet, “Susan and the whole swim community was very supportive. The whole experience has been a huge confidence booster.”
"Seeing people jump into this competition, whether they are experienced Masters swimmers or new to the program is thrilling,” said Susan Cooney, the Meet Organizer and Director. “The energy was incredible. Everyone cheered and laughed throughout the meet. And let’s not forget the baked goods donated by participants to fuel their swimming… Delicious!”
Zach Blanchard, WCY Aquatics Director, added, “It was inspiring to see so many people come together to support our Bluefish team. The funds raised will make a real difference in the lives of our young swimmers. We are grateful to all the volunteer officials and timers, and especially Susan, Aaron Winslow, and Betsy Bradley, who made this possible."
The WCY Bluefish team provides a supportive and challenging environment for young athletes to develop their swimming skills, build confidence, and learn valuable life lessons. The Dan Horton Invitational plays a crucial role in ensuring the continued success and accessibility of this vital program.
